Collaboration and adaption in challenging times
Since the election in Mozambique in October 2024, the country has been marked by violence and instability. Despite this, our dedicated partners and employees have found solutions that enable us to continue our work in ensuring food security in the region.
The unstable political situation has posed significant challenges to our efforts to combat aflatoxins, which represent a serious threat to food safety and food security. Delays in equipment deliveries, restricted mobility, and the risk of attacks on facilities have created a demanding work environment. The AflaLivre factory in Nampula, which was intended to operate at full capacity, has not yet been able to fully open.
All Hands on Deck: Partial Manual Production Delivers Results
To ensure production does not halt, we have, in collaboration with local partners, initiated partial manual production. Using the available machinery and with additional efforts from our staff, we are now producing approximately 2 tons of Aflasafe daily. In comparison, the factory at full capacity could produce around 5 tons per day.
This effort comes at a critical time, as the peanut planting season is underway. Aflasafe is now being distributed to smallholder farmers in the area, and local retailers have also been supplied with the product.
“The post-electoral political instability in Mozambique presented significant challenges, but Aflalivre demonstrated resilience by prioritizing employee safety, implementing preventive measures, and maintaining operational continuity. Despite delays, we resumed Aflasafe production, and conducted critical training sessions to strengthen our capacities. We remain committed to adapting our strategies to ensure safety,” says Libania Felizardo da Fonseca, Managing Director at AflaLivre.
Collaboration Ensures Progress
Through collaboration, flexibility, and the hard work of our employees and partners, we continue to contribute to food security and safety in the region. Despite challenging circumstances, this demonstrates how local efforts and global partnerships can overcome obstacles and create lasting positive change.
