Norges Vel (The Royal Norwegian Society for Development) is a independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to sustainable food systems, business development and vibrant local communities.
Founded in 1809, we are Norway’s oldest nation-wide member organisation. Our members include both companies and individuals who support our mission to create value, innovation and viable livelihoods in rural and coastal areas.
Since 1978, we have also been engaged in international development, working in close partnership with producers, cooperatives and local organisations in East and Southern Africa to strengthen food systems and build profitable, sustainable businesses.
We drive the development of new industries and value chains, build clusters and networks, and support entrepreneurs, producers and partners in turning ideas into sustainable businesses. Our work spans from strategic project development in Norway to long-term international programmes in East and Southern Africa.
Norges Vel operates its own farm at Hellerudsletta outside Oslo, where our headquarters are located. We also have an office in Bergen, as well as country offices in Tanzania and Mozambique.
Because of our historical significance and societal role, Norges Vel is under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway.
Our vision is to build resilient, thriving local communities – in Norway and internationally.
Our work is guided by a strong commitment to sustainable development based on social responsibility, environmental stewardship and sound economic principles. All our activities support one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
