Norges Vel's work is important to counter some of our times largest challenges, such as climate change, poverty, and lack of access to energy. We believe it is vital to see these challenges in context of each other. The world's population will increase by over 2 billion over the next 30 years. In Africa there will be twice as many people as today and a massive requirement for food production.

Reducing poverty with local business development

The overarching goal of Norges Vel's international work is to reduce poverty by contributing to economic growth through business development. Our primary focus are the men and women who rely on agriculture or aquaculture. This includes smallholder producers, small-scale land owners, entrepreneurs and small to medium sized businesses.

We contribute to local communities receiving higher wages and more employment opportunities through sustainable and environmentally friendly use of local resources. This way Norges Vel works to create sustainable food production that gives more people the opportunity to eat healthy and nutritious food.

Creates pride and self sufficiency

Norges Vel is different from other non-profit organisations in that we have a clear focus on business development. We work with effective organisation, development of modern value chains and facilitate so that organised smallholder producers capture a larger part of local value creation through processing and better access to markets.

Norges Vel helps create pride and independence for people in communities, so that they ultimately can succeed without donor support.

Our work connected to the UN SDGs

Through the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the world community has set the goal of eradicating hunger, reducing poverty, achieving food security and promoting sustainable agriculture and food production by 2030. Norges Vel contributes to this work through our commitment in several developing countries, primarily in East- and Southern Africa.

Norges Vel's work focuses on the following SDGs:

  • Goal 2: Zero hunger
  • Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth
  • Goal 17: Partnerships for the goals

In addition, different projects contribute to one or more of these SDGs:

  • Goal1: No poverty
  • Goal 5: Gender equality
  • Goal 7: Affordable and clean energy
  • Goal 13: Climate action
  • Goal 14: Life below water

Framework agreement with NORAD

The majority of our business development projects in Africa are supported through a framework agreement with NORAD. We also have other partners, information about these are given individually on each project description.
