H.M. Dronning Sonja er Norges Vels høye beskytterNorges Vel has had royal protection since April 1810. Shortly after the conception of "Norwegian Society for Development" the 29th of december 1809, society was allowed to call itself «The Royal Norwegian Society for Development» by King Frederik VI.  He also put the charity under his «…allerhøyeste beskyttelse» (highest protection). This protection is something the royal family has kept to this day

Royal protection has a long historic tradition in the Norwegian royal palace. In earlier, more volatile times it would often be literal protection from physical harm in the form of body guards or a protection letter from the King or a prince. Today the agreement works as recognition that a company or organisation does important work in society.
